The polo remastered.
Polos have been a preppy staple for a long time. When I think polos, I think of Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren. The problem with polos is that they've been associated with bros and frat boy dads everywhere. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means that not much has changed for the polo in a long time.
That was the case, until---wait for it-----right now. The new polo has reverted to a retro 1960s Americana style. Think Bob Benson in Joan's apartment before they hit the beach (nailed it). Here's how to pick out a polo with a bit more spark: Look for three to four buttons, slimmer through the torso and sleeves, a pocket, and if you're lucky even a button down collar. Gents, pay attention, because this is the new polo.
Why is this better than the typical polo you're used to? The polo is looking more and more like a slim fitting casual shirt. The extra buttons makes the collar sit up off your body like a fresh button down. Same goes for the oxford style collar (button down collar). A contrasting collar adds a unique touch, but don't think that a solid won't make you look just as (if not more) dapper. A solid polo allows more versatility-- you can wear it under suits without fear of clashing, etc.
Unfortunately, it's harder than it should be to find some of these bastards. Key places to look are Original Penguin, Uniqlo, and Banana Republic.
- Add a few buttons.
- Don't be afraid to wear a three/four button polo under a suit.
- A retro fit polo is the perfect balance between formal and casual to keep cool during the summer.
